Debra alerted me to something she had learned about our 6th great grandparents, James Butler and his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Harris. Apparently they lived and were buried in what was known as St. Paul's Parish in Virginia.
St. Paul's Parish basically became Hanover County.
Guess who lives in Hanover County, Virginia? I do! As does Stephanie and her family! Not only that, the Fishers are members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Hanover. The current St. Paul's Church site only dates back to 1840, and James and Sarah were long gone by then - James died in 1759. The church that they would have attended is gone, and no one seems to know exactly where it was located.
However, back up a bit: In 1729, a new church was built to replace the original St. Paul's Church, which was likely built in the mid 1600's when the area was settled by our ancestors, among others. That building, built in 1729, is now known as Slash Church and it is still standing and in use. It is located on Mt. Hermon Road. As am I! And the Fishers live in a subdivision just off of Mt. Hermon Road, about halfway between my house and Slash Church.
I think there is a small cemetery there - I will be checking it out to see if I can find them. However I get the creeps every time I drive through that little area for some reason! So I'm waiting for a partner in crime to go with me. Stephanie said that Slash Church is also known as a Pokestop. I'm guessing that means Pokemon?? However, that doesn't make me feel safer, so I will wait for one of my kids to join me in this escapade!
Bottom line: There is a chance that our 6th great grandparents are buried very close to where Stephanie and I live. If they are not buried at Slash Church on Mt. Hermon Road, then they are likely buried just a few miles further away, and we will keep looking.
Well, you know how excited I am about this, ancestry-geek that I am! This "coincidence" of your living in the area where our very first immigrant ancestors settled is beyond amazing. Cannot wait until you go out sleuthing like Nancy Drew. Oh, and I love that you have started the blog up again.
ReplyDeleteI know!! I can't wait for you to come up here so you can help me sleuth!
DeleteWow, how exciting is this to hear. Kathy, maybe you can look for the graves at night to make it more interesting? I'm sure Stephanie will go with you.
ReplyDeletelol Mike - too bad my night vision is so bad!
DeleteI guess our Halloween plans are made!
ReplyDeleteRight! Halloween at Slash cemetery - what could possibly go wrong with THAT plan??
DeleteHow cool!
